Poll Says Britney Spears Is More Influential Than Christ
BRITNEY SPEARS is more influential than Jesus Christ and Mother Teresa, according to a new poll which reveals our obsession with celebrities.
The singer's almost iconic status shouldn't come as a surprise in a world where the lives of the rich and famous is an entertainment business in itself, providing ideal gossip fodder.
But psychologists are still shocked that people seem to have higher regard for some stars than they do for politicians and religious leaders.
Britney finished seventh in a survey which asked 999 people over 15 to name the figure they felt inspired them most. As well as beating Christ, she also came out ahead of figures including Gandhi and Mother Teresa.
Prime Minister Tony Blair will be relieved to know that he did beat the American pop princess - but only just.
Arts and media psychologist Andrew Evans, who co-wrote Fame: The Psychology Of Stardom, with Glenn D. Wilson, carried out research in his book into who people consider to be public figures.
He says his findings point to the powerful impact celebrities have on the public. He said: "I'm gobsmacked that Britney Spears could be viewed as such an influential person, but it shows how importantly some people view celebrities. I can't see how someone like Britney could be inspirational. It doesn't show much thought. But it is part of a worldwide dream for people to think anyone can rise from nothing to be a star.
"I, personally, would be more inspired by family and friends, philosophers and psychologists."
Former South African President Nelson Mandela came out top in the poll, carried out by Mori for BBC's The Heaven And Earth Show.
He was named by 65 per cent of people, with Sir Richard Branson finishing in second place. Margaret Thatcher came third, above Pope John Paul II in fourth, while Tony Blair tied fifth with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey.
But the surprise name on the top 10 has to be Britney, who grabbed six per cent of the vote - beating Mother Teresa's two per cent and Christ's one per cent. She also trounced Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton and Martin Luther King, who only scored one per cent each.
Evans added: "This poll shows that people have a very poor sense of history because Mandela and Thatcher are relatively recent. Churchill has almost disappeared.
"We live in a world where actors are more famous than politicians. A lot of people don't know what real inspiration is, so they chose the nearest thing to it - and look to pop culture and Britney Spears. This sort of answer sends out a red alert, culturally speaking."
But although pop stars and movie actors are sometimes more famous than politicians - the political leaders still scored strongly on this poll.
However, with Thatcher beating the Pope and Britney winning over Jesus Christ, it seems religion isn't viewed as an important influence in everyone's lives. In fact, 79 per cent of those questioned said they had never worried about whether they were going to heaven or hell and 31 per cent had never prayed.
Dr Joseph Houston, philosophy and religion lecturer at the University of Glasgow said: "Maybe most people would have been reluctant to put down Jesus Christ, because they felt he wasn't on a par with the others.
"People live in the moment when they are asked questions such as this, so they tend to answer with who is giving them a buzz right now."
Even when it came to listing influential publications, newspapers came out top in the poll, beating the Bible to second place.
Celebrities weren't forgotten in this category either and Hello! magazine picked up eight per cent of the vote.
