Kobe Bryant mulling offers to play in China

Kobe Bryant

The NBA star has talked with a Turkish team, but could end up playing in a different country.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is engaged in far more substantive contract talks with teams in China than he is Turkish team Besiktas, league sources told.

Besiktas coach Ergin Ataman tweeted Sunday that the team made an official offer to Bryant last week and plans to meet with Bryant’s agent in Los Angeles this week. However, a source close to Bryant said he hasn’t had conversations with the Turkish team in two weeks, and labeled Bryant’s chances of playing with Besiktas at “zero percent.”

Bryant, sources said, is still listening to offers to play overseas during the NBA’s lockout, and considers China a more likely option. He has exchanged proposals with Chinese teams, and one source said it’s unlikely Bryant would accept any deal that pays him less than $1.5 million per month. Bryant would be free to rejoin the Lakers as soon as the lockout ends.

Bryant, a source close to him said, also has become irritated with Besiktas officials making public proclamations on the status of talks with him.

Bryant was in Washington over the weekend to participate in a celebrity soccer game held by Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra. He recently returned from a three-week trip in which he spent time in China as well as the Philippines where he played in two exhibition games.

Besiktas already has agreed on contract terms with New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams to play next season in Turkey until the lockout ends. Allen Iverson played for Besiktas last season, but an injury cut short his stay.

Bryant said during his recent trip to China that he would consider playing in China or Turkey during the lockout.

Peyton Manning leaves money on table

Peyton Manning

The owner of the Colts wanted to make Peyton Manning the game’s highest-paid player.

You knew that the Indianapols Colts were going to re-sign Peyton Manning(notes) to a new contract — the cap figure if they franchised him would have been so prohibitive (over $20 million in the 2011 league year, which would have Manning taking up more than one-sixth of the Colts’ total salary cap space), any other option short of letting test the open market would have been preferable.

Fortunately for the hearts of Colts fans everywhere, the team was able to come to terms with perhaps the most important player in Colts history — if we’re not talking about Johnny Unitas. Manning signed a five-year, $90 million contract on Saturday that will pay him $69 million in the first three years.

“Signing Peyton was a top priority for this organization and we are thrilled that the deal is complete,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a statement released by the team Saturday. “We feel that it is a salary cap friendly deal and it allows us more flexibility.”

ds like the lockout that just ended. In any case, this deal gives the 35-year-old Manning the security of knowing that he’ll retire from the game with the only team he’s ever played for, in an offense he runs to a ridiculously high standard. And he hasn’t lost a bit of his ability — last season, with injured receivers all around him, Manning attempted and completed the most passes of his 13-year career.

Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Lionel Andrés “Leo” Messi; born 24 June 1987 in Rosario) is an association football player who currently plays for FC Barcelona and the Argentina national team as a forward or winger. Considered one of the best football players of his generation, Messi received several Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21, and won in 2009 and 2010. His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi as his “successor”.

Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He left Rosario-based Newell’s Old Boys’s youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke his team record for the youngest footballer to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi’s debut season, and won a double of the league and Champions League in 2006.

His breakthrough season was in the 2006–07 season; he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Messi then had the most successful season of his playing career, the 2008–09 season, in which he scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble-winning campaign. This record breaking season was then eclipsed in the following 2009–10 campaign, where Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo’s record total for Barcelona. He surpassed this record in the 2010–11 season with 53 goals in all competitions.

Messi has won five La Liga titles, three Champions League titles, scoring in two of those finals, against Manchester United in both 2009 and 2011. He was not on the pitch as Barcelona defeated Arsenal in 2006, but received a winners’ medal from the tournament. After scoring 12 goals in the 2010–11 Champions League, Messi becomes the third player after Gerd Müller and Jean-Pierre Papin to top-score in three successive European Champion Clubs’ Cup campaigns. However, Messi is the first one to win the Champions League top scorer titles for three consecutive years after Champions League changed its format in 1992.

Messi was the top scorer of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship with six goals, including two in the final game. Shortly thereafter, he became an established member of Argentina’s senior international team. In 2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year. In 2008, in Beijing, he won his first international honour, an Olympic gold medal, with the Argentina Olympic football team.

Michael Jordan’s High School love letter revealed

Michael Jordan's Love Letter

A note written by the basketball legend during chemistry class in 1980 mysteriously emerges.

Michael Jordan’s tough-guy reputation will no doubt survive this revelation, but it’s no less surprising and not the least bit less charming that a recently revealed high school love note Michael penned in 1980 shows him to be just as smitten as we all were, when gathering our thoughts as we prepared a note meant for the object of our teenaged affection.

Yes, Michael Jordan wrote notes. Letters, to be more specific, including an alternately sheepish and smooth bit of romantic correspondence that he apparently wrote as a student at Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, N.C., in the early 1980s, well before he embarked on his Hall of Fame NBA career with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards.

In the letter, which sold at auction for $5,100.66 in December 2004 and was posted Thursday by the folks at the great site Letters of Note, Jordan apologizes to his “dearest Laquette” for making her “look pretty rotten,” then goes on to extol her beauty, explicitly point out when he had made a joke, offer her “his best love” and sign the whole shebang with his full name, including his middle initial.

My Dearest Laquette

How are you and your family doing, fine I hope. I am in my Adv. Chemistry class writing you a letter, so that tell you how much I care for you. I decide to write you because I felt that I made you look pretty rotten after the last night. I want to tell you that I am sorry, and hope that you except my apologie. I know that you feelings was hurt whenever I loss my necklace or had it stolen.

I was really happy when you gave me my honest coin money that I won off the bet. I want to thank you for letting me hold your annual. I show it to everyone at school. Everyone think you are a very pretty young lady and I had to agree because it is very true. Please don’t let this go to your head. (smile) I sorry to say that I can’t go to the game on my birthday because my father is taking the whole basketball team out to eat on my birthday. Please don’t be mad because I am trying get down there a week from Feb. 14. If I do get the chance to come please have some activity for us to do together.

I want you to know that my feeling for you has not change yet. ← (joke) I am finally getting use to going with a girl much smaller than I. I hope you my hint. Well I have spent my time very wisely by write to you. I hope you write back soon. Well I must go, the period is almost over. See you next time around, which I hope comes soon.

With my Best Love

Michael J. Jordan
